Let's make our own fire!

Many rural areas where farming is the main stay and their cooking is done with firewood and this is gotten by cutting down trees, As the years roll by, the further they have to go to fetch it. Most of this rural dwellers are farmers who generate from their harvest such as rice husk, groundnut husk etc.

Briquettes made from farm waste.
This same waste can be re-generated to produce briquettes for cooking needs. For those who may choose to use rice husk which is generated in huge volume at rice mills and at most times burnt by mill owners who regard it as waste, For making briquettes which can used in places where hitherto charcoal or firewood is being used one only have to mix the rice husk or saw dust with used paper  which would serve as a binder.

Heap of rice husk.

The rice husk/saw dust is mix with used paper in water and a mash is made out of it before it goes into briquetting machine. These two videos will give you an idea of it process.

After the production of the briquettes, it is then spread in the open to sun-dry and you have your cooking fuel which is cheaper and cleaner!

This is a cheap technology that can change how we live and view our wastes! It is a good venture for those around such waste.

  1. Putting this in practice may take some time and a lot of advertising, especiallt in areas where people are used to wood. One also have to consider competition that would arise when you have done all the work of creating awareness and people now want it.
